Ice science experiment

With the cold weather coming in January an experiment was arranged that the children could learn about water and how it freezes. Being Normal Wednesday morning there were many questions in the beginning, where is the Ice? How long will it take until it is ready? The teaching staff talked a little about the words that are needed such as Freezing and gave the children some ideas. The first problem to solve was how to contain the water. The first drops of water on the small plastic sheet ran off. Some children guessed correctly that this would happen. The first solution was to lay a cloth under the sheet. This helped contain the water as it was soft and the water made a small puddle. The children then experimented with small sticks building squares and triangles. Once the concept was ready everyone put their coats on and we went to the garden. Down by the caretaker’s storeroom there were lots of long bits of wood. They were carried up the hill and then formed into a grid. The big plastic sheet was carried up the hill and laid out next to the grid. But it was smaller than the grid. With a bit of moving things around the grid was made the correct size and the sheet laid over the top. Once it was all built the forms were filled with water.
